Letter From Love To The Body

Letters From Love... a project by author Liz Gilbert.

The instructions are to write first line as "Dear Love, what would you have me know about xyxz…" and enter your topic, then continue to write as LOVE. Let the words flow from you as a response. You can read my Letter from Love to my body here…

"Dear Love, what would you have me know about my body today?"

Sweet innocence, of course you think you are your body.

You think your body can be controlled.

And my precious one, you are not wrong, just mistaken.

You can rage against your body in despair as it fails in the great tidal race against time, becomes old, injured, sore, and eventually gets sick and dies.

But such rage is to no avail. Your body is a sweet miracle of life. Just like that pear tree outside your window. it needs nothing more than sunlight and rain and love.

And like the tree, one day it will cease bearing fruit, one day it will fall.

And you know that, but dear forgetful one, in your fear and your sleep you do not awaken to the miracle your body is.

This body that has sailed seas for you, ridden horses for you, birthed babies and fed them for you.

Love wants you to know your body is not a temple that requires devout worship, for goodness knows the trouble some souls have when they worship the body.

Your body is both a delicate orchid flower and a huge giant cedar tree.

It can store, withstand and be strong through hurricanes of grief when losses open up your sweet heart.

Your body deserves love not worship.

Your own kind hand on your lap.

Your own small smile on your face.

Your own tiny turn of your neck to glimpse in the window the wind brushing the leaves outside.

Your body loves yoga even when you don't.

Your body feels the breath and when you breathe again it breathes again when you settle into your body on the mat it settles into its place on the earth.

It doesn't care how big or small how tall or short how thin or fat it is but it does care that you are so harsh to it when you think it's bad or wrong. It knows how to soften into your kindness. It relaxes into being at peace with your stillness.

Don't be mad at the body, silly crazy one, that's insanity, go howl at the moon instead.
