The Long and Winding Road: Honouring the Cycles of Yoga Through the Seasons
In the world of yoga, there are no shortcuts. It’s a long and winding road—a path of deepening rather than arrival. And in a world that celebrates speed, productivity, and instant results, this can feel almost radical. When I tell my students, “there are no quick fixes,” I know I’m asking them to swim against the current. But I also know that the true, lasting changes that yoga brings—in body, mind, and spirit—emerge only through genuine effort, reflection, and time.
This is why I return, again and again, to the wisdom of the seasons to guide my teaching. The natural world does not hurry. It follows cycles of growth, decay, stillness, and renewal—and so should we. When I tune into what the season is offering, I find that my own pace slows. My teaching becomes more grounded, more intuitive. I’m no longer rushing to deliver results, but inviting my students into a deeper relationship with themselves, just as they are, in the moment they’re in.
Embrace the Season
Each season brings a different energy. Spring calls forth renewal and courage. Summer expands into vitality and strength. Autumn invites release and reflection. Winter asks for stillness and restoration. By letting this seasonal rhythm influence my classes, I can connect with students in a way that feels more natural, more aligned. Whether or not I mention the season directly, it shapes my language, my pace, and the intention I bring to the room.
Explore Nature’s Flow
Just as the trees don’t rush to bloom, we don’t rush into the full expression of a pose. In the Joint Renewal Method, inspired by Kaiut Yoga, we slow down. We explore the natural flow of our movement—gently awakening the joints, meeting ourselves where we are, without force or expectation. The movements may be simple, but their depth lies in how we do them. Like the quiet fall of a leaf or the first frost, it’s the subtlety that carries power.
Mindful Connection
Practicing yoga in sync with the seasons deepens mindfulness. It reminds us that our bodies, like nature, thrive in cycles—not in constant acceleration. When we shift our focus from progress to presence, the practice becomes less about achievement and more about awareness. Each pose becomes a moment of listening. Each breath, a return to what is real and present.
Community and Companionship
And we don’t do it alone. There’s something powerful about practicing with others who are also seeking a slower, more intentional way of moving through the world. Together, we explore not just the yoga poses, but the deeper invitation behind them: to pause, to soften, to trust in the process. As the season turns, so do we—turning inward, turning toward what matters.
Yoga, at its heart, is not linear. It’s not a race or a ladder to climb.
It’s a spiral, a cycle, a remembering.
In Joint Renewal Yoga, we’re not trying to stretch further, push harder, or reach an ideal. We’re practicing the art of presence. We’re giving the joints time to open, the nervous system time to settle, the body time to relearn its natural intelligence.
Yoga isn’t about where we’re going.
It’s about how we are, right now, in this moment.
And wherever you find yourself in this season of your life.
