I do suggest you check with a health care professional to get permission (or you wish to self-declare yourself fit enough) before starting yoga. However, depending on what your doctor understands about yoga, and especially this method, you may need to explain it's a very simple method with no complicated poses and very little risk of injury. The classes are slow, mindful and sometimes require long holds which help you build strength. The practice is suitably challenging but not too difficult. All postures and movements are adaptable and can be modified so you can participate fully and get all the benefits you are looking for.
Yes, if you are a yoga zero, you can become a yoga hero by following the path. Start with the 21 day challenge of just 5 minutes a day, then build up to 15 minutes. You can watch the modifying poses videos if you have any restrictions. Then build up to an hour long recording and join the monthly Live class each month. If you are already experienced, you can go straight to the audio classes. All classes are taught in a way that allows you to work at your own level, being respectful of any restrictions or stiffness you have. Old injuries or surgery can also be modified for. I prefer not to say how much you should practice, but rather ask why are you practicing? What's the purpose of doing yoga? Then, with that in mind, you will decide how much you want to do. 5 minutes a day every day is far better than 90 minutes every now and then.
